DEPLOYING PORKIES SOUTHWEST SOON. STOP. CAMP THERE. STOP. ALL WIRES TO HERE FOR DELIVERY TO CAMP. STOP. TO DATE, NO PROGRESS ON MACKLEY OR JUNGER. STOP. ADVISE ON BEAR OWNERSHIP. STOP. BAPCAT.

“Where’s Sister Jone’s name?” Scale asked. “It ain’t there.”

“Her leadership is for the mountains, not legal matters. She told me to take care of things, and I didn’t argue.”

Scale gave the hint of a grin. “Here I thought you don’t know swirls from squirrels, but maybe you’ll learn.”

“What kind of name is Scale?” the Western Union man asked.

“Term of affection among men who seen the elephant, which clearly you ain’t.”

“I object,” Bowdler said.

Scale said, “Man don’t object; he act. What you gon’ do?”

Bowdler glanced at Bapcat. “Is your man always so intolerant and abrasive?”

“First, he ain’t my ‘man,’ and if you mean he comes across like a sharp stick up the arse, he is.”

“I descend from warriors,” Scale said haughtily. “My tribal name is Quashi Ojnab.”

“Well, la-di-da,” Bowdler said. “Nigger with a pedigree. You got paper on that stuff, or is it all hand-me-down hot-air talk?”

Scale seemed to study the man. “Guess you could grow a backbone after all. I don’t mix with men got no backbone.” Scale looked at Bapcat. “Okay, I can work with this clerk, but don’t leave me too long or I’ll start usin’ words like abrasive and intolerant, and strut around like some damn po-fessor.”

“Name’s Thomas,” Bowdler said, extending his hand.
